Image of the Week

The image received on March 29, 2016 from SPOT 6, satellite shows Morzhovets Island, located in the White Sea at the entrance to the Mezen Bay.

Administratively, the island belongs to the Koydensky rural settlement of the Mezensky District of the Arkhangelsk Region. The area of the island is 110 square meters. km, but this figure is constantly decreasing, as the island has steep sandy shores, which are showered under the onslaught of the sea.

In 1843, meteorological observations were organized on the island. Since 1906, observations began on the temperature of the water, the degree of sea agitation, the specific gravity of the water, and ice observations. Later added observations of the snow cover, sunshine, soil temperature and icy frost deposits. Until 1938, the station was called Morzhovsky Mayak, from January 1938 — Morzhovets. This is one of the oldest weather stations in Russia.
