Today we publish an archive image from SPOT 6 satellite, received on June 15, 2013. The image shows the southern part of the Evenki District of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, where the Tunguska Nature Reserve is located.

The history of the creation of the Tunguska Reserve is inseparably linked with the history of the study of the natural phenomenon that happened on June 30, 1908, when a super-powerful explosion of a space object of unknown nature occurred in the interfluve of Podkamennaya Tunguska River and its right tributary Chunya River, 70 km northwest of Vanavara settlement, known as "Tunguska meteorite".

The explosion was preceded by the passage of a dazzlingly bright body, accompanied by strong sound effects, observed by thousands of eyewitnesses in the vast territory of central Siberia. The destruction of the cosmic body took place at an altitude of 5-10 km, geophysical phenomena accompanying the explosion were recorded not only in Siberia, but also in many points of the Western and Eastern hemispheres.

The nature of the Tunguska phenomenon remains to this day unclear, since there are no decisive data on the material composition of the Tunguska cosmic body.

The idea of preserving the area of the Tunguska phenomenon for future generations belongs to the Soviet specialist in mineralogy and meteorite research Leonid Kulik, who organized and led several expeditions in 1927-1939, discovered the radial nature of a continuous fall of the forest at the site of the fall, tried to find the remains of a meteorite, organized aerial survey and collected information from witnesses of the event.
